Lower Sixth Biologists at Wakehurst Place

13th Jul 2026

Lower Sixth Biologists spent a very hot day at Wakehurst Place, Kew Gardens' wild botanical gardens, last week. First, they carried out their A Level sampling practical by using belt transects and quadrats. Soil composition, light intensity, and species richness were analysed in area samples in the shade and direct sunlight, followed by a guided conservation walk involving endangered species around the world. Finally, there was a visit to the Millennium Seed Bank, the world's largest underground seed bank and conservation resource for diverse wild plant species. The seed bank is home to over 2.5 billion seeds from wild plants, representing over 40,000 different species and taxa from countries worldwide. It was so hot that only a brief visit to the bank was possible, but everyone had a wonderful day in beautiful surroundings.
