“Pupils are extremely polite and highly motivated to learn. In lessons, they are keenly engaged and committed to mastering what they are being taught.” Ofsted, September 2023
At Key Stage 4 we build on the work begun in Key Stage 3 by aiming to provide a balanced curriculum. Pupils study 9 or 10 GCSEs.
The core subjects of English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Science and one foreign language (Spanish, French or German) are studied; in addition, pupils are required to select either Geography or History. Most pupils sit three separate GCSE Science subjects (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), whilst a small number (approximately 20 annually) sit Double Award Combined Science. Options provide opportunity to choose additional subjects of particular interest, including Art, Computing, Drama, Design Technology, Economics, Music and PE. Pupils can opt to take both Geography and History and can study more than one language. Provision is made for gifted and talented maths pupils in set A1, who follow the AQA Further Maths Level 2 programme in conjunction with their GCSE Mathematics.
Pupils also take core PE lessons once a week and have one period a fortnight for PSHE and core RS. These are non-examined aspects of the curriculum.
During the Spring term of Year 9, pupils choose which subjects they would like to study in addition to the core subjects at GCSE. The GCSE Options Booklet provides pupils and parents with information to help them make their choices.
