Houses of Parliament Politics Trip

10th Feb 2025

On Monday 3rd February, L6 and U6 Politics students set out to visit the Houses of Parliament  Starting our day early, we took the 7.38am train up to London and made our way through airport style security to the Palace of Westminster. We were given a guided tour, where we saw both the House of Lords and Commons, the Central Lobby and Westminster Hall, and it was amazing to stand where our favourite politicians have debated some of the UK’s most controversial issues.

Did you know that only 427 out of 650 MPs can be seated in the commons at a time?

After this, we crossed the road to explore the UK’s highest court of appeal, the Supreme Court at Middlesex House. We were able to see the gold embossed robes that the 12 Supreme Court Justices wear (of which only two are currently women!), and discover more about the process of legal appeal. Fortunately, a case was being heard in one of the court rooms, so it was fascinating to have the opportunity to listen to the legal terms and experts that we learn about in our politics lessons.

The National Portrait Gallery was open, so naturally, we had to explore as several of us are also studying History A Level. There were two Tudor rooms, each filled with numerous paintings of the powerful monarchs of the Tudor dynasty. We were able to admire the original portraits of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, many that we recognised from our textbooks.

Thank you to Mr Walker and Mr Fry for organising the trip for us.
