Year 10 History Trip to the Old Operating Theatre and the Science Museum

Year 10 History students recently visited the Old Operating Theatre and the Science Museum. This trip perfectly complemented their GCSE Medicine Through Time course, providing invaluable insights into the evolution of medical practices.

At the Old Operating Theatre, students witnessed a gory demonstration of an amputation as it would have been performed in the 1820s, with a willing volunteer. This experience offered a stark contrast to modern medical procedures and highlighted the significant advancements made in medical technology and patient care.

The students also delved into the rich history of medicine by exploring the Herb Garrett, a fascinating collection of medicinal plants and herbs. This hands-on experience allowed them to understand the role of herbal remedies in historical medicine and how they have evolved alongside scientific discoveries.

The Science Museum provided a further opportunity for students to explore the fascinating interplay between science and medicine. The Medicine wing showcased the remarkable progress made in medical technology over centuries. From early surgical instruments to cutting-edge medical imaging technology, students were able to witness the evolution of medical science first-hand.

The trip was a resounding success. Students gained further insights into the historical context of medicine and the remarkable progress made in this field. The hands-on experiences, interactive activities, and engaging exhibits provided a valuable and memorable learning experience for all.
