U14 Hockey Team through to Regional Finals

U14 Hockey Team through to Regional Finals

10th Oct 2024

After the success of our Under 16 team at their County tournament, we are delighted that our Under 14 team are also through to their Regional Final. Here, team member Alice gives a thrilling account of their performance:

On the 3rd of October, 2024, the TWGGS U14 side travelled to Radnor House to compete in the County Tournament.

The group stages began with a 3-0 win against Radnor House, a great start to the tournament against the home team with TWGGS doing very well to keep possession and score some great goals, including some great finishes from Libby and Bronagh. We carried through this momentum to our next game, where we came out with a dominant win against Duke of York, finishing 6-0 to TWGGS. The team managed to work together well and execute lots of short corners which was the main source of our goals in the match and the tournament.

Our final match of the group stages was against Cranbrook, who had also won both their games, meaning it was vital to get the win to get the first place position in the group. Cranbrook were a strong side, although we proved to be stronger, battling to a 3-0 win, which included some great team goals. We then faced a long break before we would play Ashford, a powerful, attacking team who we knew would be strong.

The match began with many breakaways from the Ashford side; however, we managed to regain control and get a 2-0 lead. Although Ashford pulled it back to 2-1, we managed to stay strong and move forward to the next stage of the competition. We were now into a three way round robin final with Kent College and Sutton Valence. First, we played against Kent College, who were an attacking side, gaining most of the possession throughout the match. This meant our team had to work extremely hard to stop them scoring, which was also down to our goalkeeper, Isla, who made same amazing saves to keep us in the contest. We managed to just about fend them off and  eventually we got an opportunity of our own, which we knew we had to capitalise on. Poppy got the final touch, taking us 1-0 up with a brilliant goal. This was the turning point in the match and despite many more short corners, KC could not score and we came out on top.

Now it was time for the final match against Sutton Valence, who had also won their match against KC. The top two teams would go through to regionals, which meant that we were already through, but we were determined to be county champions. Sutton Valence were a very good opposition with a very good forward line and both sides were pushing hard to get a goal. The first goal came from TWGGS’ Amelia but, shortly afterwards, Sutton Valence equalised and we were level for the final few minutes. Neither team could score, meaning the game would be decided on shuffles. After four shuffles taken by each team, Sutton Valence managed to steal the victory on sudden death.  An unfortunate end to some brilliant performances from TWGGS throughout the day, which the whole team should be proud of. We hope to continue this teamwork and determination as we head through to the regional finals.

Alice, 9G
