Donna Ashworth Poem Adorns the Walls in Our Sixth Form Centre

26th Sep 2024
We are proud to have the Donna Ashworth poem, 'Unstoppable', adorning the stairwell in our Sixth Form Centre, the Hazell Building.

Mrs Marchant chose to read the poem at an end of year assembly for the Sixth Form last year, and it was received very warmly by our pupils. Mrs Marchant and Mrs Davis, our Head of Sixth Form, decided that they loved it so much they wanted to to be a permanent installation so that all pupils could read it and be inspired by it.

Mrs Marchant sought permission from the poet, Donna Ashworth, who said that we could use "any of my words any way you like with my love and blessing". The presentation of the words, literally ascending as pupils go up the stairs, or lifting them as they descend, seemed an entirely appropriate way to display them, and Donna Ashworth herself is very pleased with it. Thank you so much to Mrs Flisik, our DT and Art Technician, for producing the art work.

For Mrs Marchant, the words really resonate from a Sixth Form perspective, as pupils so often do change and rise again. She said, "Our pupils are so resilient, and so many have overcome so much, and it gives me hope every time I see it."

UNSTOPPABLE
by Donna Ashworth

Unstoppable,
they called her.

But I saw her stop.
I saw her stop many times.

Sometimes,
I thought she had stopped for good.
But no,
she always found a way to resurrect.
Rise again.
Not the same,
never the same.

Each time a little more determined,
and a little less vulnerable.

Unstoppable, they said.
But I think it was in the stopping,

that she found her power.
