CCF Navy Field Gun Run
7th May 2024
Members of the Navy section of CCF recently took part in a field gun training day. Here, Cadet Cecily F reports on the day:
"We started the day by getting to school at 09:00 and meeting together in a classroom. Once everyone had arrived, we made our way outside to do some drill practice and look over what we have previously learnt. After this, we looked at the history of field guns and started to focus on our understanding of them. We watched a video of Royal Navy crews race taking apart and constructing a field gun. It was very interesting to learn all about it!
After this, we set out onto the field to try and have a go ourselves and it was a real surprise to find out the gun was so heavy - 200kg! Everyone took turns to try different jobs on taking it apart and putting it back together. The tasks included dragging the gun and limber along a 100 metre course twice, changing all the wheels, lifting the whole assembly off the ground and "firing" six salvos. Throughout the day, we challenged ourselves to do this in as quick a time as we could and we did it in under four minutes! This exciting day taught me about how important teamwork is and gave me some new knowledge on field guns. I had a lot of fun with everyone I did it with too!"
