Think Big. Dream Wild. Act Together.
We are very proud that three of our pupils have been selected to attend the World Scout Jamboree in SaeManGeum, South Korea, next Summer. Shannon Merritt, Amy Schipper and Renata Howe Marquez will be part of the 108-strong Kent contingent that are part of the party of 4000 from the United Kingdom.
In the words of Amy, the Jamboree is a "massive gathering of Scouts from all around the world" and, like the Olympics, takes place every four years in a different country. The Jamboree next year is a milestone, as it's the 25th such event in scouting history and is expected to be attended by over 169 scouting nations, with 40,000 young people and leaders taking part.
The purpose of the Jamboree is to unite the world scouting community with their shared purpose of building a sustainable world. In the words of the UK scouting movement:
"We dream about a sustainable world, where everyone's welcome. But we're not just about dreaming, Scouts want to see action too. Our UK Contingent won't silently creep around global issues, we'll be trailblazers for getting your voices heard ... you're gonna hear us roar. We know that dreams come true when we work together."
Our three scouting trailblazers took part in rigorous selection camps last December, with Renata and Amy among those representing Tunbridge Wells, while Shannon is attending on behalf of Sevenoaks scouts. The three are very excited about the 12 day event, mainly at the prospect of experiencing what it's like to be with so many from such diverse nations.
Since their selection, and in the run up to next year's events, the scouts participate in pre-camps for preparation. Four of these have been completed so far, with the next one taking place in December with the whole of the Kent contingent. They have also been working to fund their own passage to South Korea, which has helped to unite them as a team too.
We wish Amy, Shannon and Renata the best of luck for their exciting experience and look forward to hearing all about it next year!
