On Monday 3rd February, the TWGGS U16 hockey team competed in the Tier 3 National finals in Nottingham.
After a delicious breakfast at the hotel, we had the first match at 10:30 against Loreto grammar school. Within minutes we managed to get a short corner with Anjalie doing a fabulous drag flick to score us our first goal of the tournament! Soon after, Tabbi scored us our second goal with an awesome sweep straight into the net. We went into the 2nd half winning 2-1, with the score staying put for the rest of the game due to an amazing reverse stick save on the goal line from Georgia!!
Excitement was high going into the second game against Stephen Perse school. Daisy scored us an early goal by smashing the ball into the goal in her signature way. However, it was a hard match against a tough team. Milly and Emily made some amazing runs in the attack, but the other teams defence kept us away from the goal. In the end the score was 3-1 to them.
Everyone enjoyed singing and dancing before our third match and spirits were high going into the match against Newcastle-under-Lyme school. They were a tough side who took many hits at our goal but goalkeeper Lizzie made 5 incredible saves, including saving one penalty flick from them. As well as some great tackles from Bela and Lilia in defence, we managed to stop the other team from scoring. Our attack worked really hard, with everyone working so well as a team together. Unfortunately, we couldn't get a goal past their strong defence. The final score was 0-0, which was an incredible result against a very strong side (who ended up winning the tournament) considering we had no subs!!
Our final match was to see if we would be 5th or 6th place in the tournament, against Yarm school. With some very impressive skill, Charlie managed to snag us a cheeky goal to put us in the lead. Eva played amazingly to help bring the ball up to forward Ruby who helped give us good opportunities to score. We ended up winning that match 1-0 making us 5th in the Nation for tier 3 u16s!!! We had only lost 1 match in the tournament and we are so proud of how well we did.
Everyone was very happy (and tired) on the minibus back, celebrating how well we did. Unfortunately, we then broke down on the M25...! But everyone stayed positive and happy with our foil blankets and used it as a true team bonding experience.
We are so proud of how we did (and very happy to now be finished with the early morning sessions)! We are all incredibly thankful to Miss Withers and Mrs Scovell for organising all our training sessions, matches and helping us get to nationals and for this amazing experience (and can’t wait for the promised Freddos!). And thanks to Miss Jacquin, for accompanying us to Nottingham and being a great cheerleader!
We would also like to thank our parents for being amazing supporters and cheering us on loudly at every match.
Lastly thanks to co-captains Daisy and Charlie for always keeping us motivated.
