Year 9 England Basketball Player

Year 9 England Basketball Player

16th Jul 2024

We are very proud of Sophie in Year 9 who was recently selected for the England National Basketball U14 team. Here she tells us of her achievements:

On the 20th to 23rd June, I was selected for a basketball tournament in Copenhagen. It was a pleasure to be able to represent the England National Basketball Team to play against different players from foreign countries. Earlier this month I went to the England team selection camp with 20 players and after I put in immense effort, I was amongst the outstanding 14 players who got invited to the U14 Girls England National Team. This was all because of the hard work and time I put into doing the sports I love. And I wouldn’t have succeeded without the help of TWGGS' PE department.

In the Copenhagen invitational, we competed against four Swedish teams and one Lithuanian team. In my opinion, it was an amazing and new experience to compete with players from other countries as it helped me get better. I feel honoured that my coach picked me in the starting five line up in every game. At the end, I proved that I was worthy by scoring 26 points in total, being the fifth top scorer on the team. Despite being the shortest and smallest player on the  team, I have proved that heart is over height. The best thing is that the U14W England team won the championship in this tournament with an undefeated record! We played hard and played as a team so this championship belonged to us.

Thank you so much for this opportunity to showcase my talent and skills @bballengland. Especially a massive thanks to the TWGGS PE teachers who provide support and encouragement all the time and let me use the school basketball court in the mornings. This is beneficial to my future pathway in taking the PE GCSE course at school. What a pleasure to win for our home nation and thank you for the support! Looking forward to more opportunities soon!"
