On Wednesday 28th February, I had the pleasure of accompanying a small group of our Upper Sixth English Literature students to attend a production of their set A Level Shakespeare text, Othello, at the spellbinding Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, located in London’s Bankside. The playhouse itself offers a theatrical experience like no other: as a reconstruction of the early indoor theatres performed in by Shakespeare and his contemporaries in the early seventeenth century, the intimate space is lit entirely by the light of over a hundred beeswax candles!
The production saw Othello brought into the twenty-first century, emphasising the enduring themes of jealousy, passion and revenge that underpin the play. We were taken into the world of the Metropolitan Police, with radios, guns and shadows. The production afforded the play a sense of urgency and fresh relevance, proving Shakespeare’s timeless appeal. We were all thoroughly impressed by the directing, acting, and musical score that carried the play and enthused about it during the interval and during our journey home! A wonderful evening of theatre was enjoyed by all!
