Year 8 Shakespeare Festival

10th Jul 2023

On the 28th June, the whole of Year 8 partook in our annual Shakespeare Festival. Each form was allocated a different Shakespeare play to perform, spending several weeks ensuring that the set, props, costumes, lighting, sound, acting, directing, and promotional materials came together in the lead up to the highly anticipated final performances to Year 7 in the afternoon and, for the first time in four years, to the Year 8 pupils’ families in the evening.

During the morning, each form had a full tech run through in the hall and were able to rehearse all morning in their designated rooms, putting the final touches to their showstopping performances. Every form rose to the challenge spectacularly, with the chair of judges, Dr Blanch, commenting on how impressed she was by the overall standard in what proved to be a spectacular showcase of Shakespearean theatre at its finest.

A prize giving ceremony followed the performances: every form won at least one prize as a group, in addition to the prize winners for outstanding individual performances. Caitlin Peters won the prestigious award for the best overall actor, earning a place on a short course to further develop her acting talents at the Pauline Quirke Academy.

The event was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended: it was particularly lovely to be able to invite parents and families back into school this year, so that they were able to see the culmination of their children’s hard work and talent.
