A Level Drama and Theatre Trip to 'Nachtland' at The Young Vic

14th Mar 2024

Nachtland 2

On 13th March, the A Level Drama and Theatre classes went to see a production of Nachtland at The Young Vic theatre in London.

The play covered themes of anti-semitism, cancel culture and the effect of Hitler on modern day German society, using art as a vessel to do so. While mostly being contained in on-stage dialogue, moments of direct address to the audience managed to question the viewer on their personal prejudices as well.

The play led us, as a youthful audience, to question the morals and beliefs surrounding the political movements across the 1930s to the 1950s. In doing so, it also begged us to consider what we, in modern times, deem as socially acceptable. In a traditional Brechtian style, to highlight the troubling themes, there were brief moments of comedy, emphasising later scenes that had a harrowing realism of the Holocaust events.

All artistic choices, from acting to directing, helped to raise an awareness for the accepted anti-semitism still prevalent in today's society.
