Physics CERN Trip

13th Mar 2024
On the 8th-9th March, eight TWGGS Physics A Level pupils and Dr Taylor took part in a joint trip with Skinners to visit the CERN Particle Accelerator and Research Institute in Geneva, Switzerland.

After an early morning flight and checking in at the hostel, the first stop was the History of Science Museum. Here, pupils got to interact with scientific equipment and see devices that, in their time, were at the forefront of discovery. After leaving the museum we then walked along Lake Geneva to the city centre, where we had a tour guide provide a detailed overview of Geneva’s cultural, political and historical significance. We finished off the day by enjoying dinner in a traditional Swiss cheese fondue restaurant... accompanied by live yodelling!

On day two, we got to visit CERN - the main attraction! Our tour included time spent seeing the control centre and getting an up close view of one of nine detector experiments at the Large Hadron Collider, ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment). Speaking to scientists and hearing first-hand about the discoveries, issues and future plans was certainly an inspirational experience. We then had great fun in the recently renovated visitor centre, interacting with some fun attractions, gallery exhibits and virtual-reality. Before our departure, we stopped-off in Geneva city centre once more, providing us with a chance to buy mementos and visit one of the many chocolatiers!
