TWGGS has just hosted the 70th visit from German partner school Clara Fey Gymnasium in Bad Godesberg, Bonn.

 

The exchange began after a chance encounter when a teacher from TWGGS engaged in conversation with a fellow train passenger, a nun, in 1950, who just happened to be a teacher at CFG. By the time they left the train, they had vowed to set up an exchange which then took place in 1951 - remarkable given this was only six years after the end of World War Two. The exchange continued every year until Covid struck in 2020 and the exchange was called off 2 days before the Germans were due to visit. Covid’s aftermath prevented the exchange taking place until TWGGS finally visited Bonn in November 2023 and the return visit to Tunbridge Wells has just taken place. A party was held to celebrate the anniversary in the Performing Arts Centre at TWGGS, attended by the current exchange participants and guests, including former teachers who accompanied the exchange.
