U14 State School Hockey Festival

U14 State School Hockey Festival

26th Mar 2024

On the 16th March, TWGGS U14 hockey team participated in the state school seven a side tournament, where they played five matches

It was our first tournament since winning nationals, though a different format and a smaller team. We were all excited though to get in another fun tournament, and were lucky enough to get to play at Marden hockey club.

The first match we played was against our local school Bennett, and we managed to get off to a good start with a 5-0 win. We then proceeded to immediately play two more matches, where we gained another two great wins, with plenty of goals scored and saved by our goal keeper.

After playing 3 matches in a row, we had a lunch break, before heading back out to the astro for our toughest game yet against Cranbrook. We scored an early goal, however Cranbrook were a strong team and levelled the score. This match resulted in a 1-1 draw, so in order to win the tournament, we had to win the last match with a reasonable number of goals. And in this match, we really proved how well we can play together as a team, with a whopping 8-0 win. Not only did we score plenty of goals, but we were connecting passes beautifully, and proving to all other sides that we were a dangerous team to play.

Overall, every single player contributed, including the fact that all 8 outfielders on the team scored a goal - disappointingly our goalie Lizzie didn't though. Furthermore, across the tournament, we scored 25 goals, which averages to 1 goal per 4 minutes! This meant that we had won the tournament, and we received a gold medal and another trophy to proudly bring home.

Lastly we wanted to thank Miss Withers for continuing to coach us through these tournaments, and Mrs Haskett for driving the bus and supporting the team.

Daisy B, Year 9
